Lie-Nielsen Block Planes

Block Planes Bench Planes Chisels Independence Saws Specialty planes and Tools Scraper Planes

Block planes are a versatile group of tools that have the blade bedded bevel up.  The blade is supported as close to the cutting edge as possible, minimizing chatter. They are useful for all sorts of trimming jobs, especially on end grain, but the larger Block Planes with thick blades rival Bench Planes on difficult grained woods.

Lie-Nielsen Bronze Block Planes (L-N 102 and L-N 103)

These small Bronze planes fit perfectly in the hand and slip easily into the pocket.  The 5 1/4" body holds a 1/8" x 1 1/4" blade.  An unobtrusive stainless steel adjuster offers blade control of micrometer ease and precision with minimum backlash.  The blade in the Low Angle Plane is bedded at 12 1/2° for fine cuts and end grain.  The Standard Angle Block Plane blade is set at 20° and will take a heavier cut with the grain.  The heft and feel of polished bronze fashioned in such a delightful shape will make these the most reached-for tools in your kit.

Lie-Nielsen Low Angle and Standard Angle Adjustable Mouth Block Planes (L-N 60 1/2 and L-N 9 1/2)

These iron Block Planes are 6 1/4" long with a 1 3/8" x 1/8" thick iron.  Bodies are surface ground dead flat on the bottom, and feature a movable shoe to allow precise, easy control over the mouth opening in front of the blade. You can easily adjust the tool to suit the work being done-- a very fine mouth setting for finishing work and the merest shavings, or an ample opening for rank cuts.

The Bronze Cap Iron is large and comfortable.  It is tensioned with a 1 1/2" brass spinwheel.  Like other Lie-Nielsen Block Planes, the blade is adjusted with a captive nut for precise control with minimal backlash.  Blade on the Low Angle tool is bedded at 12°, the Standard Angle at 20°.  Blades are ground with 25° flat bevel.

Lie-Nielsen Rabbet Block Plane (L-N 60 1/2 R)

Many years ago, Sargent made a small rabbeting block plane, No. 507.  Ohio Tool offered a version as well.  It's great design, handy as a block plane and wider than most rabbet planes, making trimming tenons to fit easy.  Being fond of low angle planes, we've lowered the cutting angle to 12°.  Non-adjustable mouth, 1 3/4" overall width, 6 1/4" long, unbreakable Ductile Iron body. Bronze cap, 1/8" blade, body ground flat and square.

  Rabbet Block Plane (L-N 60 1/2 R) $135.00

Lie-Nielsen Skew Block Plane (L-N 140)

This unusual plane derives from the Stanley No. 140 taken out of production many years ago.  It is a Block Plane with a skewed blade and a removable side plate to allow quick conversion to rabbeting.  The set of the blade has been lowered to 12° and an adjustable fence added, making it more convenient for rabbeting and cross-grain work, such as fielding raised panels.  The 1 1/2" blade is hardened to Rockwell 60-62 and has a captive nut for positive and accurate adjusting.  Body is equipped with a nicker for cross grain work. Castings are Manganese Bronze.  Body is 6 7/8" x 1 7/8".

  Bronze Skew Block Plane (L-N 140) $190.00

Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Smoothing Plane (L-N 164)

The Low angle Smoothing Plane is based on the rare Stanley 164, and is essentially a shorter version of the Low Angle Jack Plane-- with the adjustable mouth, and a massive 3/16" thick, 2" wide, blade, set at 12°.  However, this tool is only 9 1/2" long.  Like the Jack plane, the Low Angle Smoothing Plane excels at both rough and finish work, and can be converted from one mode to another very quickly.  At 3 3/4 lbs., this tool has authority behind it.  It is equipped with a full size handle and front knob.  The unique overhead Bailey type blade adjuster provides smooth depth adjustment at your fingertips.

  Low Angle Smoothing Plane (L-N 164)  $215.00

Lie-Nielsen Low Angle Jack Plane (L-N 62)

The Low Angle Jack Plane is based on the Stanley 62, a 14" plane with a 2" blade bedded at 12°.  The adjustable shoe allows easy, precise adjustment of the mouth opening.  The body is made from fully stress relieved Ductile Iron castings.  The blade is a hefty 3/16" thick, ground razor sharp.  Adjusttment is very positive with a knurled stainless captive nut.  The cap iron is Bronze, knob and handle are Cherry.  This is and outstanding plane. The low angle blade set with the bevel up (making this technically a block plane) was originally designed for end grain work-- flattening butcher blocks.  Our massive blade makes for very smooth cutting on end or long grain and figured woods.  The generous handle is hand-shaped for a comfortable grip.  The soles are ground dead flat.  Design and workmanship combine to make a tool that will be a pleasure to own and use every day for years to come.

  Low Angle Jack Plane (L-N 62) $210.00

Lie-Nielsen Iron Miter Plane (L-N 9)

The Iron Miter Plane is based on Stanley's No. 9, discontinued in 1943.  It weighs approximately 4 1/2 lbs.  Giving the iron miter plane solidity ideal for many planning jobs on straight and end grain.  Its boxy construction is designed specifically for the tool to be used on its side, with or without a shooting board (see Fine Woodworking No. 106, June 1994), to shoot lengths, right angles, and of course, miters. A detachable “Hot Dog” handle is provided and mounts on either the left or right side near the front to facilitate your grip.  The 2" wide blade is set in the tool bevel up at 20° with a 25° bevel, making this a very large block plane, with an included cutting angle of 45°. The Bailey-type adjuster controls the blade easily and precisely even while planning. The mouth is fully adjustable.  Sides and bottom are machine ground dead flat and square.  Ductile Iron, Bronze, Brass, Cherry and tool steel construction.

Iron Miter Plane (L-N 9) $325.00

Lie-Nielsen Bronze Edge Plane (L-N 95)

Lie-Nielsen's first plane, the Bronze Edge Plane, is an adaptation of the Stanley No. 95.  It has an integral 90° fence, making its primary use trimming edges of stock square.  With appropriate angle blocks, it can produce various angles or widen dadoes and rabbets to depth.  The fence, coupled with a low-angle skewed blade, makes these jobs simple and precise, working either with or across the grain or on plywoods.  Makes an effective small jointer used with a straight edge clamped to the work.  The lever adjustment moves the blade with almost zero backlash making adjustment positive and exceptionally smooth.  Width of cut is 7/8".  Planes are 5 3/4" long.  Available in both left and right hand versions for occasions when you need to approach the wood from opposite directions.

Bronze Right-Hand Edge Plane (L-N 95R) $115.00

  Bronze Left-Hand Edge Plane (L-N 95L)  $115.00
