Lie-Nielsen Toolworks Bench Planes
Bench Planes are the workhorses of the shop. Lie-Nielsen now
makes all sizes that Stanley did, from the tiny No. 1 smooth plane to
the huge No. 8 Jointer. Each bench plane has its own charm, but
personal preference plays a large part in choosing the right bench plane
for a particular job. A beginner needs two basic sizes-- a smoothing
plane (No. 4 or 4 1/2) and a Jointer (No. 7 or 8). A Jack Plane
(usually a No. 5) would be the next most useful size. Lie-Nielsen Bench
Planes (except for the No. 1) are based on the Stanley Bedrock model.
Bedrocks were the top of the line, heavier and better made than the
standard. The frog design is unique-- a fully machined mating
fit between the frog and the body. The design also allows precise
and easy adjustments of the mouth opening from the rear without having
to remove the lever cap and blade.

Lie-Nielsen No. 2 Bench Plane (L-N 2)
The Lie-Nielsen No. 2 is 7 1/2" long with a 1 5/8"
blade. Although a small bench plane, the No. 2 is considerably
larger than the No. 1 and has good heft in the hand. The
body is available in Bronze (weighing about 3 1/4 lbs.) or cast
Iron (weighing about 3 lbs.).

3 1/2 lbs., Bronze weight 4 lbs.

Lie-Nielsen No. 4 Smooth Plane (L-N 4)

blade, 4 lbs. in Iron 4 1/2 lbs. in Bronze. Capable of taking
the finest shavings from the most difficult woods.

Lie-Nielsen High Angle Frog
Until now, all Stanley-type bench plane irons were bedded at
45°, or common pitch. But the famous English Smoothers like
Norris are usually 50°, or York pitch. The higher pitch
makes smoothing difficult wood easier. Lie-Nielsen's unique
High Angle Frog quickly converts Lie-Nielsen No. 4 and No. 4 1/2
Smoothers to York Pitch. These frogs will also fit other
Lie-Nielsen planes with 2" and 2 3/8" blades.
Will not fit other makes of planes.
