Lie -Nielsen Scraping Planes

Block Planes Bench Planes Chisels Independence Saws Specialty planes and Tools Scraper Planes

Scraping Planes are perfect for finishing woods that do not yield well to the hand plane.  A scraping plane is more comfortable to use than a hand scraper, and a plane body helps you keep the surface you are scraping flat.  They can be tricky to master, however.  To make it easier, we do not recommend using a burr, at least until you've learned how to use the tool.  These tools will cut very well with the blade sharpened like a plane blade.  Blades come with a 45° bevel.  A planned finish will always be preferable to a scraped finish, and Lie-Nielsen Bench Planes will give great results on almost any wood.  But, there are times when a scraping plane is the best tool for the job.

Lie-Nielsen Cabinet Maker's Scraper (L-N 85)

This elegant Scraping Plane is a very comfortable size between Lie-Nielsen's large and small Scraping Planes.  Full width blade allows you to work against an adjacent vertical surface; tilting knob and handles save your knuckles.  The blade angle is not adjustable.  The blade is bedded directly against the body, greatly reducing and tendency to chatter-- this is therefore the easiest scraping plane for the beginner.  Length 8 3/8". Width 2". Blade width 2". Weight 3 lbs.

Cabinet Maker's Scraper (L-N 85) $185.00

Lie-Nielsen Small Scraping Plane (L-N 212)

Lie-Nielsen's Small Scraping Plane (5 1/2" long with 1 3/8" x 1/8" blade) is based on the Stanley 212, which is scarce today and brings high prices from collectors.  It is ideal for smaller work (fly rod makers like it for thicknessing bamboo fly rod sections). Available with a Bronze or Iron body.

Small Scraping Plane   Bronze $135.00

Iron $135.00

Lie-Nielsen Large Scraping Plane (L-N 112)

The Large Scraping Plane (9 1/2" long with a 2 7/8" x 0.140" blade; weighs 4 pounds) is based on the Stanley 112, and is great for working large surfaces such as tables. Iron body only, ground dead flat.

Large Scraping Plane $195.00
