B56-257. SLITTING GAUGE. E. Briggs. Fruitwood, 9" stem, tapered head with two brass wear strips and hand carved boxwood locking screw. Blade is marked by sawmaker Welch & Griffith and held by two brass wedges. Briggs was an early maker who worked in Foxboro, MA, at the beginning of the eighteenth century and produced a variety of well made and attractive gauges. This has his plain "E.
