B56-455. SURVEYOR'S KIT. Includes a plain compass by Frederick Heisely of Harrisburg, silver dial engraved "Heisely & Son Harrisburg" with fleur-de-lis at north, 5-1/2" blued steel needle which is stuck in position, one cross level at south, cover and sighting vanes missing wire, plain socket, brass tarnished but undamaged. In a wooden box that also includes two plumb bobs, an unmarked surveyor's chain that looks like a four pole (66'), and a collection of surveyor's stakes. All in a fitted wooden box with "Jacob Schnotterby Fredericksburg Pa" on the lid, original leather strap. In addition, the compass cover has the name F.W. Martin engraved on the underside, with Schnotterby's name and the notation that he was Martin's assistance, along with the date 1876. Heisely & Son was in business from 1811 through 1836.
