B57-363 PLATED SHEFFIELD BRACE. Barton Bros. Body looks like tiger striped maple. Plating is engraved "Barton Brothers Sheffield, Utile dulci, Patent Brace." A handful of these braces have surfaced; Ken Roberts' research indicated that Barton worked in Sheffield in the 1850s, but the nature of the patent is unclear. "Utile dulci" means that the design combines the useful with the pleasurable. The head has several chips around the edge and a large crack and the brass medallion is worn but the body is very clean. A very uncommon brace. Good 200-400 **All bids must be placed by end of day Friday, October 30, 2020.
