B57-418 MOLDING PLANE. Israel White. Quirk bevel and cove, with the quirk cut by a separate cutter and both quirk and cove lignum boxed. This pattern is noted in Whelan, page 251, as having been made by George White, Israel's brother, whose business Israel took over. The profile is 2-1/2" wide, 13-1/4" sole with centered open tote. The mark is not exactly the same as any in AWP, it most closely represents B1 but with 12 stars around the eagle and "I. White" in the place of the journeyman mark, a little worn at the top but very clear. The plane itself has a couple of issues; part of the boxing has been replaced by stained wood, the smaller wedge may be a replacement, and the plane body appears to have been refinished. Still, it's a unique profile by one of America's most iconic early planemakers. Good+ 200-400 **All bids must be placed by end of day Friday, October 30, 2020.
