B57-431 SURVEYOR'S PLAIN COMPASS. G.J. Heisely. Silvered brass card, fleur-de-lis at north, "G.J. Heisely, Harrisburg" at south; 5-1/2" blued-steel needle, circular tally counter. The needle has a bent tip, the glass is stuck inside the cover, the only level is missing its vial and one end, and one of the sighting vanes doesn't seem to fit although it looks original. No case. Definitely a compass with issues, but one that would repay some restoration work. Includes Jacobs staff with original handwritten tag indicating that it was the property of one Clarence Wingard, a farmer from Carroll County, Indiana, born in 1876, whose family may have brought the compass from Pennsylvania. George Jacob Heisely was the elder son and apprentice of Frederick Heisely. Good- 100-200 **All bids must be placed by end of day Friday, October 30, 2020.
