B57-459 METAL PLOW PLANE. Elihu Dutcher. Dutcher, of Pownal, VT, worked in the 1840s and made one of the earliest known metal plows. Although the handful of known examples have the word "Patent" cast into the frame no patent has been identified. Unlike the example in PTAMPIA I, Figure 88, this one has slotted nuts holding the arm and depth stops, all identical and clearly original. It also has a complete undamaged tote and all of the screws holding the wooden fence. There's a 3/16" break in the top of the left depth stop, no right depth stop present, and the name Dutcher is very faint. Very clean and super rare. From the Bud Steere collection.
