B57-584 INFILL BENCH PLANE. G. Eastwood. George Eastwood, who worked in York from 1851 through 1899; he was a prolific maker of wooden and plough planes but not infills. This plane is by an unknown maker who supplied several York retailers. Gunmetal body with a dovetailed steel 13" sole that protrudes 2" to the toe and heel; unusually, the toe and heel are also dovetailed into the middle of the sole. The infill looks like rosewood and is shaped at the toe to match the decorative shape of the shell; gunmetal bridge and wooden wedge (chipped at the end). The double 2-1/4" iron is marked by Eastwood, and "G. Eastwood, Plane Manufacturer, York" is engraved on the left cheek. There is a second, much tighter, mouth near the heel, almost as if it were intended to be reversible. Very attractive and unusual plane. From a legendary private collection of infill and metal planes. Good+ 3000-6000 **All bids must be placed by end of day Friday, October 30, 2020.
