B58-299 EIGHTEENTH CENTURY FIGURAL FRENCH BOARDING AXE. This beautifully decorated hand-forged axe was acquired by John and Jan Wells on a trip to France and for many years was the centerpiece of their legendary collection. The head is in the form of a bird of prey - probably a falcon, because a falconer is pictured on one side of the blade - the spike is its beak, and the other side of the blade is decorated by feathers. The strapping is also in the form of feathers. The head is 7" long including the spike, and the original handle is 12" with some inactive worm. There is a small piece missing at the bottom of the front strapping, which is how they found it, but it's otherwise in immaculate condition. A truly stunning, museum quality work of art. Featured on page 111 of Sandor Nagyszalanczy's Art of Fine Tools. Fine 10000-15000
