B58-344 PATENTED FLEXIBLE SOLE PLANE. William Cole. . Patented in 1848 by William Cole of New York using single flexible piece of steel with locking screws at heel and toe; basically the same design Leonard Bailey would copy 23 years later for the first model No. 13. Beech body, 8" sole, 2" Wm Butcher No. 11 cutter, brass lever cap with thumbscrew. All known examples were manufactured by A.B. Hoyt and have his mark. This one is marked in front of the throat. An example with a wood wedge marked on the toe is in PTAMPIA I, Figure 147. Ranked R1 (very rare) in Larson & Blanchard. From the Bud Steere collection. Good+ 500-1000
