B58-387 THREE-ARM PLOW PLANE. Israel White. Extraordinarily rare handled version of White's 1834 patent, second version with the bridle type bridge. Beech body, bridge and wedge, boxwood nuts and fence, ebony arms with ivory tips. Ivory adjustment scales inlaid into front arm and body to adjust brass depth stop. Two brass rollers in the fence, one of only two known examples with this feature. The mark is not identical to any of those listed in AWP; it's closest to the D mark but with a row of stars surrounding the eagle and the word "Warranted" missing. The serial number is 106. There are no journeyman's initials in the mark itself, but the initials "JS" are stamped in the bridge, indicating that it was made by James Silcock. Threads are immaculate, a few chips from the fence and tight checks around the throat, ivory tips white and complete with a couple of small checks. The lot includes a framed reproduction of the 1833 broadside advertising the patent and signed by 100 Philadelphia architects, carpenters, cabinetmakers and piano makers endorsing its virtues. A plane as beautiful as it is rare, destined to be the centerpiece of any advanced collection. From the Dennis Fisher collection. Fine 10000-20000
