B58-468 BORING MACHINE. Merchant Patent. Originally patented in 1861 by Niram Merchant of Guilford, NY, and manufactured by the Guilford Iron Works; this is actually the improved version patented in 1876 by son Andrew. It's purpose is to drill two parallel holes in the side of a plank and was intended specifically for use by coopers in assembling cask heads. Unmarked but clearly matches the patent drawings. Drive wheel is 16" in diameter and it's mounted on a 10" by 14" base with a crack that looks original. Needs a cotter pin to hold the drive wheel on, otherwise complete and works smoothly; just the thing if you need to drill two parallel holes; also makes a great doorstop. Good+ 100-200
