b61-595 INFILL RABBET PLANE. L. Brandt. Danish immigrant Lauritz Brandt was one of the few US planemakers who made European-style infill planes, primarily in New York for the pianomaking industry. Most of Brandt's planes were traditional infills, with an iron or gunmetal shell around a wooden fill. This one, however, is solid iron, a technique pioneered by Napoleon Erlandsen, who learned the trade from Brandt (see lot 594). It is unsigned, but the mouth design is typical of Brandt, and the assumption is that after Erlandsen developed the technique Brandt adopted it. 7-1/2" sole with a 5/8" unmarked iron, rosewood wedge with significant wear damage. It also has a plate welded on the heel, apparently to repair damage done to the strike button. Despite its issues, a significant part of US planemaking history. Good 300-600
