These drills show up occasionally and are similar enough to suggest that they were manufactured, although the maker is unknown. It has been speculated that they may have been made by H.O. White of Hebron, CT, maker of some of the earliest Taylor-style metal braces (although he tended to sign his work). This is a nice clean example, 11" long, cast iron throughout except for brass crank handle. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. These uncommon drills were described in the catalogs of New York hardware dealer A.J. Wilkinson as "Hotchkiss' Breast Drill", and some examples have been found with a round label on the breast plate describing them as "Smith's No.1 Hand Drills Hotchkiss Sons, Agts"; that label is missing here but there is a shadow to show where it was. 14" long with an oval, cast iron gear box; the gears and breast plates have traces of their original gold paint. Wood has a couple of cracks but otherwise very clean. A very early and uncommon form of American breast drill. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. G-P's heaviest duty breast drill, with divided gear enclosure. 19" long with malleable iron frame and leather breast strap that (unusually) is fully intact. Japanning 80%, red paint and decals on drive wheels have typical crackling, works smoothly. From the collection of David Jeffers. Stephen McClellan, originally of San Marcos, TX, and subsequently of New York, is known for his corner braces covered by four patents, but he also patented this breast drill with a handle that can be moved to different positions for corner work, and two protruding ears used to anchor a chain drive. Far rarer than the corner braces, this one is in good shape and works smoothly, with some light surface oxidation. The handle is stamped "McClellan Sound Beach CT." There are a few versions around but all are uncommon; this one is unsigned and 9-1/2" long. Steel with wooden head, original leather pull strap is intact but we wouldn't yank on it too hard. Tower & Lyon advertised these drills as the Whitney patent, but the patent date given is actually for a method of making drill bits. The drills are highly prized for their elaborate red and gold pinstriping, which on this example is 85% complete. In its original wooden box, with nearly intact label in the lid. There are two bits included in the wooden bit holder, and in addition a plastic bag filled with bits, at least some of which may be original, and a wooden tube with lengths of wire. We're not sure if it came with the drill, but it was included in the box so the buyer gets it. A central bit that is operated by the handle, and then a trepanning type hole saw can be slid down the shaft into place and operated by the T-handle. At least that's how it appears to work, but we're not brain surgeons. 18-1/2" overall, steel shaft, the main handle is plated brass with the plating mostly gone and the T-handle is wood with traces of metallic paint. Unsigned. Unusual. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. Second version of Rusby's gizmoish extendable drill, the version with the wooden handles. One handle is missing, but it has the almost always missing detachable small breast plate.
