Uncommon variation on the bow drill in which the drilling motion is produced by pulling on a spring-powered armature that automatically returns. There are a few versions around but all are uncommon; this one is unsigned and 9-1/2" long. Steel with wooden head, original leather pull strap is intact but we wouldn't yank on it too hard. Goodell-Pratt chuck marked with Lanfair's patent. Works smoothly. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. Plated steel body with plated brass handle. The crank handle has a ball and socket joint that allow maximum flexibility in positioning and operating the drill A couple of very small dents on the handle and tiny patches of surface oxidation, but complete and works smoothly. Unsigned but believed by the consignor to be French in origin. From the collection of Steve Dice. Tower & Lyon advertised these drills as the Whitney patent, but the patent date given is actually for a method of making drill bits. The drills are highly prized for their elaborate red and gold pinstriping, which on this example is 85% complete. In its original wooden box, with nearly intact label in the lid. There are two bits included in the wooden bit holder, and in addition a plastic bag filled with bits, at least some of which may be original, and a wooden tube with lengths of wire. We're not sure if it came with the drill, but it was included in the box so the buyer gets it. A central bit that is operated by the handle, and then a trepanning type hole saw can be slid down the shaft into place and operated by the T-handle. At least that's how it appears to work, but we're not brain surgeons. 18-1/2" overall, steel shaft, the main handle is plated brass with the plating mostly gone and the T-handle is wood with traces of metallic paint. Unsigned. Unusual. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. Second version of Rusby's gizmoish extendable drill, the version with the wooden handles. One handle is missing, but it has the almost always missing detachable small breast plate.
