Materials illustrating the range of Yough Pumps produced by Boyts, Porter & Co. of Connellsville, PA. Includes a 1922 catalog (8-1/2" x 11", softbound, 71 pages) illustrating the full range of pumps offered and proudly reproducing the awards the firm received at the 1903 Columbian Exposition; a "special catalogue" dedicated just to electric pumps (7-1/4" x 9", softbound, 30 pages), in its original mailing envelope; and a framed engraving of a 12" suction pump, 22" x 18". It appears that the pump may have been named after the Yough River, as we searched in vain for a patent, and the firm seems to have gotten its start supplying the mining and extractive industries that flourished in western Pennsylvania. All materials are in immaculate condition, and if you like pumps, this is the lot for you. Invented by Edwin Thacher in 1871 and manufactured in the US by Keuffel & Esser (which usually misspelled it as "Thatcher.") Thacher's innovation was that by cutting the scales into segments and mounting them around the cylinder he was able to achieve the accuracy of a slide rule more than 60' long. Scales are in very clean condition, the base decal with instructions is almost intact and completely legible. 24" wide. No case. Fine 300-600
