"I. Carpenter" is Rev. Israel Carpenter, the nephew of E.W. Carpenter who was apprenticed to his uncle before becoming a minister. Toe is marked (upside down) by Carpenter (four stars) and with the patent date, and a second name appears to be "F. Dartels" instead of Smith ? could be a user but the lettering is identical.
