B62-601. EARLY EUROPEAN IRON PLANE. Wrought iron rectangular body with 3-3/4" sole. The sole protrudes from the front of the body, and is bent back to form the toe, and rolled at the top to form a "breaking wave" pattern front knob. Unlike most planes of this vintage, there is a wooden fill at the heel (now shrunken and with a shim) to provide a bed for the 1" cutter, and the cutter is held in place with a hand wrought ball-headed bolt through a decoratively shaped bridge. The oldest cap screw we've ever seen, predating the modern cap screw by a couple of hundred years. Part of Cliff Sapienza's collection of fifteenth and sixteenth century planes from the alpine area of Northern Italy and Switzerland. In fine condition for its age, a museum quality example of the earliest days of European iron tools. Fine 1000-2000
