B62-638. COACHMAKER'S PLOW PLANE. John Sym. Wedge arm plow plane with a curved fence that's adjustable with a flexible plate adjusted by bolts at each end, similar to the sole of a Stanley No. 13. There are only two examples of this plane known, the other of which is in the legendary David Russell collection. This one is on page 79 of Sandor Nagyszalanczy's Tools Rare and Ingenious. 6-1/2" sole, riveted fence, brass diamonds on top of arms, boxwood wedges that look original. Iron is ground to leave edges to act as nickers (Whelan, Figure 13:76). Wedge has wear. Sym's mark has been partially overstamped by an inconsiderate user but still clearly legible.
