B64-621. DECORATIVELY CARVED JOINTER. 31-1/2" sole with 2-1/4" iron held by its original wedge, finial seriously worn over the centuries but still doing the job. The tote is in the shape of a serpent curling forward over the body, very well done. The plane shown in the bottom of the photo on page 18 of Sandor Nagyszalanczy's Tools Rare and Ingenious, where it is identified as pearwood and dated to the 1600s. The throat and toe are decoratively shaped, and there are geometric decorations along the top. A few cracks as expected for age, and you should avoid yanking too hard on the tote, but overall a stunning plane. From the collection of Cliff Sapienza. Condition: Good+, Estimate: 1000-2000
