Marples advertised this pattern in its 1876 catalog as "fancy shield." It's marked "patent"; presumably a reference to Marples' registered design patent No. 3835 which is found on some of its earliest squares. 12" wide unruled blade, 8" ebony handle with one brass edge and inlaid brass pattern. The handle on this one is more worn than the others but it's intact with a couple of tight checks. Good 100-200
