TC25-179 VERNIER SURVEYING COMPASS. Thomas Whitney. 5" needle, lifting collar, silvered face with "Tho's Whitney, Maker" and hand-engraved fleur-de-lis at north, "Philadelphia" at south. One original level at south, sighting vanes. Whitney, born in London in 1765, was a major Philadelphia maker of the early nineteenth century, who supplied many of the compasses used by Lewis & Clark; William Young was his apprentice. Very clean condition. Fine 250-500
