B67-454 COMPOSITE IVORY RULE. Acme Rule Co. As recounted by Phil Stanley in his "Sourcebook for Rule Collectors", pp. 204-05, in the last half of the nineteenth century ivory tripled in price, and rulemakers who wanted to continue to offer ivory rules looked for ways to conserve. One of them, patented by Michael Hogary in 1891, was a composite method that used a boxwood base with a thin veneer of ivory. They were manufactured by the Acme Rule Co., and all known examples are marked "patent applied for." This is a twofold, six-inch caliper rule, fully bound in German silver, ivory has a mellow creamy color, straight and tight. From the collection of David Jeffers. Fine 300-600
