B67-569 LEVEL WITH POP-UP SIGHTS. Wood Patent. The spring loaded sights on the ends of the level that pop up at the push of a button were patented in 1887 by Oscar Wood of Passaic, NJ. He manufactured some himself, but most were made by H. Chapin and sold through Shapleigh Hardware and Tower & Lyon. This one is a 28" brass-bound, solid mahogany example marked Tower & Lyon No. 15, and also marked with Wood's patent information. Wood and metal are both very clean, and, unlike many examples, the sights still work smoothly. From the collection of David Jeffers. Fine 120-240
