B68-341 SMOOTHING PLANE. The Challenge. The Challenge Plane was patented by Arthur Goldsborough of Washington, DC, and briefly manufactured by Tower & Lyon. This is the 9" smoothing plane version that doesn't have the word "Challenge" cast into the yoke like the jack plane version; both are rare but the 9" model is the rarer of the two. Black paint on the knob and tote are worn and tote has a tight split, japanning 60%, some light pitting on cutter. From the collection of Harold Unruh. Good 1000-2000
