B68-354 INFILL MITRE PLANE. Towell/Moon.
Steel body with 10" dovetailed sole, rosewood fill and wedge, 2" W. Gilpin iron, decorative steel bridge with "Moon 4 Little Queen St. Lincoln's Inn Field." Thomas, and his son, John Thomas, Moon made wooden planes from 1795 through 1829, but they didn't make infills; this was made by Robert Towell to be sold by the Moons. The address on Little Queen St. was the store; the Moons were one of the few early London planemakers to market their planes directly to the public in a retail setting. The wood has light wear; the metal has some light surface rust. A very nice example of one of the earliest, and rarest, infill makers. Good+ 600-1200
