B68-485 CIVIL WAR ERA TOOL CHEST. C.E. Gotwalt. 39" by 24" and 24" high, black painted pine. Includes working lock and key but latch has become detached from lid, original handles on side. Includes six sliding compartments with full set of carpenter's wooden planes, including set of Union Factory hollows and rounds, jointers, panel raisers, rabbets and beads, four saws and miscellaneous tools, many marked by Charles Gotwalt as well as his father, Jacob, who was listed a builder in York records, from whom Charles inherited the chest and tools. Exterior of chest is worn but intact with one small chip. Binder with detailed research, receipts, and records on Gotwalt's history included as well, showing that Gotwalt, hailing from York, PA, was a private in Company A, 87th Regiment, from 1861 to 1865, and had the chest until his death in 1938. A rare piece of York, PA, and American history. Good 1000-2000
