B68-493 AUTOSET BENCH PLANE. Prototype Sargent No. 710. Early version of the No. 710, made from 1912 to 1915 before the Page patent was issued. The lever cap has a triangular piece of metal with the numbers 1, 2 and 3, which is rotated to control the depth of the cut. The lateral adjustment lever is a solid piece with a hole in the end rather than the typical folded sheet metal that Sargent usually used; not sure if it's a variation or an old user repair. Japanning 95%, wood and metal clean with some small paint splotches on the tote. Unmarked cutter. Good example of a rare Sargent variation. From the collection of Harold Unruh. Good 150-300
