B68-530 SURVEYOR'S PLAIN COMPASS. G.J. Heisley. 5-1/4" needle, silver dial with fleur de lis at north and "G.J. Heisely, Harrisburg" at south. Crossed levels in dial, tally counter in north arm. One of the sighting vanes has an unusual adjustment feature. No cover for dial. George Jacob Heisley was one of the sons of Frederick Heisley; in addition to his long career as an instrument maker he had the distinction of serving in both the War of 1812 and the Civil War, and is credited with having suggested to Francis Scott Key the tune for the poem that would become the Star Spangled Banner. Elaborate and well made. Good+ 150-300
