B68-637 BREAST DRILL. Hotchkiss. These uncommon drills were described in the catalogs of New York hardware dealer A.J. Wilkinson as "Hotchkiss' Breast Drill", and some examples have been found with a round label on the breast plate describing them as "Smith's No.1 Hand Drills Hotchkiss Sons, Agts"; that label is missing here but there is a shadow to show where it was. 14" long with an oval, cast iron gear box; the gears and breast plates have traces of their original gold paint. Wood has a couple of cracks but otherwise very clean. A very early and uncommon form of American breast drill. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. Good+ 80-160
