B56-281. MOLDING PLANE. Israel White. Quirk bevel and cove, with the quirk cut by a separate cutter and both quirk and cove lignum boxed. This pattern is noted in Whelan, page 251, as having been made by George White, Israel's brother, whose business Israel took over. The profile is 2-1/2" wide, 13-1/4" sole with centered open tote. The mark is not exactly the same as any in AWP, it most closely represents B1 but with 12 stars around the eagle and "I. White" in the place of the journeyman mark, a little worn at the top but very clear. The plane itself is immaculate, hard to believe it's over 200 years old. A unique profile by one of America's most iconic early planemakers in fine condition - does it get any better than this?
