B56-473. PROTOTYPE SURFACING PLANES. According to the story, these planes were acquired from the elderly daughter of an amateur inventor, and they obviously represent a lot of work but there's no way to tell if he ever tried to obtain a patent. Each consists of a wide flat body with four zigzag toothed blades, an open tote and knob. The first is fairly crude and labeled "prototype", the other two are more sophisticated with depth adjustment mechanisms included. Also included is a commercially made plane using the same concept, by the "Surfacing Mfg. Co." of Chicago, which wasn't obtained from the same source.
