B56-535. TRANSITIONAL BENCH PLANE. Worrall Patent. Before Thomas Worrall founded the Multiform Plane Co., in 1857 he patented a method of adjusting cutter pitch through a screw through the heel of the plane. Most of the surviving examples are jointers, but this is the rare smoothing plane length, like Figure 29 in PTAMPIA I except that the sole is only 8-3/8" long and the iron plate that holds the tote and cutter adjustment protrudes over the heel. The toe is not stamped, and the body may be a replacement. The cutter, slightly spalled, is marked both by Multiform (faint) and by A.J. Belknap of St. Johnsbury, a prominent edge tool maker (clear with an eagle). Wood has wear and body has no remaining finish, but no damage.
