Based on Nelson Palmer's 1867 patent, rather than the more familiar Palmer & Storke patent, this design featured three separate adjusting levers plus an adjustable mouth, a complex design that was very complicated to manufacture which helps explain why there are so few surviving examples. 10" corrugated sole with "Palmer's Pat" and the patent date cast behind the tote and "Metallic Plane Co.
