B56-584. TRANSITIONAL PLOW PLANE. Plettenberg Patent. Unmarked but identical to the plane shown on page 138 of David Russell's Antique Woodworking Tools. Friedrich Plettenberg worked in Iserlohn, near Essen, Germany. The plane combines a cast iron body with a wooden fence, adjusted by threaded arms. The fence, arms and nuts are all hornbeam and very clean, noting some minor wear to the outside of the fence, one chip to the threads and some damage to one of the turned finials on the from arm. The patented feature is the cutter holder, which is an iron loop tightened by a screw through the heel. There's also a depth step dovetailed into the body. A unique piece of planemaking history.
