B56-688. COMBINATION PLANE. Union (nee Siegley) No. 44 IOB. Essentially a last version Siegley No. 2. After Stanley bought Siegley, a large stock of parts remained. Stanley originally offered the Siegley line as a less expensive alternative. When sales declined, Stanley, ever thrifty, used the remaining parts under its Union Tool Co. label. Union already had a No. 2, so it was sold as No. 44. The name Siegley was ground off the sliding section, and the No. 2 was ground off the fence and painted silver to match the nickel plating. The top wing nut was stamped ?Union Plane Company Made in USA." This example is near mint with a couple of small flakes in the nickel plating. Includes a complete set of cutters in the original box and original instruction. Pasteboard box is intact with complete label. Probably the best example you'll ever see.
