B57-178 BENCH PLANE. Sandusky Schwer Patent. Although Sandusky Tool Co. was known for producing excellent products, it occasionally took a flyer on some genuinely weird designs, and this is one of them. Patented in 1928 by Wilbert Schwer, the secretary of Sandusky, it has a single large nut that serves both as a depth adjustment and lateral, and was marketed as part of Sandusky's "semi steel" line. See PTAMPIA I, figures 334 and 336, this is the No. 3SC. The tote has been skillfully reglued, but the cutter is proudly marked "Sandusky Tool Co. USA, Established 1868", the adjustment mechanism works smoothly, and it's otherwise very clean. Rated R1 for rarity (fewer than five examples) in Larson & Blanchard. From the Bud Steere collection.
