B57-639 STOP CHAMFER PLANE. Lee Patent. Cast iron version of Joseph Lee's iconic stop chamfer plane. Lee was constantly fiddling with the design and it sometimes seems that no two are alike; this one has a rotating cutter clamp that is closer to the original patent than the church-window design found on some later planes. It has a brass plate in front, and arms with decorative acorn finials. Lee's name and patent date and number are cast into the body but not marked with manufacturer Thurston, all of which leads us to believe its an earlier model. Japanning worn with slight traces of gold pinstriping, good wood on tote, cutter may be a replacement. From the Bud Steere collection.
