B58-511 PRELATERAL JOINTER PLANE. Stanley No. 8 Variation. This looks like a pretty normal Type 2 No. 8, with Bailey's name on the solid adjustment nut and J marked cutter. But there are a couple of differences. First, it's bigger - 25-1/2" long, a good 1-1/2" more than a standard No. 8. Second, it has the named "F.L. Gookin" cast in raised letters in an arc in front of the knob - not stamped or engraved, but actually cast - a name we haven't been able to find in any references. So who the heck was F.L. Gookin? We can only assume he was a user who wanted a bigger jointer than anyone else's and was vain enough to pay Stanley to do a special casting with his name in it. If you've got a better theory we'd love to hear it. Japanning intact, wood and metal fine. From a legendary private collection of infill and metal planes. Fine 200-400
