B59-481 GRAIN SCALE. Bryan Corcoran. Unusually nice and complete example of a chondrometer, or corn balance, used to weigh and determine the quality of grains. Consists of a brass steelyard, pedestal, and bucket, and a wooden striker to level the bucket once filled. In operation, the bucket would be filled with grain, and the weight per bushel read on the scale. Signed "Corcoran, London." Bryan Corcoran was a millstone builder, millwright, and instrument maker in London beginning in 1780. The lack of an "& Co." marks this example as pre-1830. In its original 9" by 3-1/2" by 3" rosewood box with complete instructions pasted in the lid. Extra nice. From the collection of Dennis Fisher. Fine 200-400
