B67-540 SPLIT FRAME BENCH PLANE. Leonard Bailey. The majority of Bailey's split-frame planes have coil springs, either under or immediately behind the knob, but a handful of examples have been found that use a flat leaf spring. They are not marked by Bailey, and Van Pernis & Wells have speculated that they were intended as a lower cost model marketed during the recession caused by the Panic of 1857. Pp. 16-18. This is an example of the first type, labeled by Paul and John as FS-1, and according to them only the second example known. It has an 11-1/2" sole, a 2" Moulson Bros. cutter, a fan-shaped leaf spring and a cast brass adjusting screw with a nib. There is a small hole in the sole behind the throat and a scratch at the corner of the throat, and some dinging at the end of the tote, but it's otherwise in near fine condition. From the collection of Harold Unruh. Good+ 3500-7000
