B67-685 STRENGTH TESTER. G. Tiemann & Co. According to Dr. Douglas Arbittier, proprietor of the fascinating and comprehensive Arbittier Museum of Medical History (medicalantiques.com), who was kind enough to lend his expertise, this was used to test the arm or shoulder strength of patients by having them pull the two sides of the device apart. Cast iron, 12" across, with a brass register marked by Tiemann. A second knob for patients to pull on, opposite the one shown, is MIA. Tiemann was founded by German immigrant George Tiemann in 1826 and at one time was the largest manufacturer of medical and surgical instruments in the United States, helped in no small part by the demand for its amputation kits created by the Civil War. From the collection of Jim and Christa Schoenky. Good 100-200
